Writing and inspiration [edit]
"Experience Again" was written by Ryan Tedder, Brent Kutzle, Drew Brown and Noel Zancanella, while product was handled by Tedder. Tedder revealed that last twelvemonth he was inspired by gospel melodies and harmonies. "The song itself was kind of a departure for anything we've e'er done before on every level," frontman Ryan Tedder said. "Information technology's very much an uptempo song and has a lot of gospel influence in it." "For whatever reason that'due south something that was resonating with me and I felt that I really wanted to shift every bit many of our songs into that vibe as possible," he said.[2]
Tedder said their partnership with Save the Children was serendipitous and it actually helped him finish the lyrics to the vocal.[ii]
"Initially nosotros simply had the beginning of a song. Save the Children came along and information technology coincided with another thought that we had every bit a band which was on this album to really focus on doing stuff that actually served a greater purpose other than but putting out some other song. The process of trying to get hits or constantly keep upwards with the Joneses, subsequently a certain indicate it's like, 'Await. Why are we doing this?'. The Save the Children plan added a serious amount of gravity to what we were doing and the corporeality of kids that we would be helping with donating proceeds from the sale of the single. It also helped me finish the lyrics. I actually had some kind of management and weight."[2]
Composition [edit]
"Feel Again" is an upwards-tempo song,[6] featuring an uplifting, hook-laden melody filled with promise and optimism.[i] It showcases a richer, fuller audio palette that accentuates the anthemic qualities of their songwriting.[1] The uplifting, emotional song contains similar catchy melodies to their past work, such every bit "Good Life", "Stop and Stare", "Repent" and "All the Correct Moves".[six]
The vocal'southward emotional pull is given a massive boost by its powerful lyrics most coming back into your own and embracing life.[7] "Heart notwithstanding beating only information technology's non working. I achieve out trying to love but I experience nothing," Tedder aches before bursting into the melodic chorus that is filled with bliss, "Simply with you lot I feel once more."[1] The hand-clap song is ultimately a tale virtually grabbing life past the horns and feeling new over again no matter what happened the day prior.[1] In the chorus, Tedder sings nigh transforming from "a lone soul" to a human who is able to honey over again;[half dozen] "I'k feeling ameliorate since yous know me/I was a lonely soul but that'south the one-time me."[vii]
Critical reception [edit]
The song received a favorable reception from music critics. Arjan Writers gave a very positive review for the runway, stating that "Experience Over again represents everything fans take come to love about the group, it clearly demonstrates that the group is evolving their make of pop."[1] The review farther added: "In earth saturated by bleak news headlines, conveying a message of living life in the moment is a timeless concept that truly has a universal appeal. And leave information technology up to Tedder and his friends to bundle such a powerful sentiment in a tightly-produced and radio-ready package that has the potential to spread like wildfire."[ane] Sam Wilbur of AOL Radio followed the aforementioned thought, writing, "The single is destined to be a elevation radio hit and a alive favorite, with its hand-clapping beats and enjoyable chorus."[7] Huw Hopkins of Alt Sounds commented, "The main chorus tune is wonderfully catchy and would make a brilliant sing-along at larger festivals. In that location is a certain soul to the vocalisation of Ryan Tedder, merely the product skills and teamwork of Zach Filkins adds an actress kick on the choral backing vocals."[8]
Some critics realized that the track is very similar to Florence + the Machine songs. Scott Shetler of Pop Crush gave the song 3 out of 5 stars, writing that "With its urgent hand-clapping and swelling vocal hooks, 'Feel Once more' sounds so like to 'Dog Days Are Over' that the band might every bit well add together a 'Featuring Florence + the Automobile' credit."[6] Shetler besides said that "Though 'Experience Once more' is far from original, the optimistic message and those 'woo-ooh-ooh' chants are difficult to resist."[6] Christina Lee of Idolator also noticed a Florence and the Machine influence, writing "Perhaps it's the handclaps. Perhaps information technology'southward the booming drums. Perchance it's Ryan Tedder's hopeful tone, or the way his voice builds, collapses and and so surges once again without always sounding defeated. Regardless, OneRepublic'due south new unmarried, reminds us a lot of Florence + The Machine's breakout single 'Dog Days Are Over'. And that'southward not a bad matter."[9]
Music video [edit]
The music video was filmed in a redwood forest[x] nigh San Francisco, California from July 31, 2012 to August 2, 2012.[11] It premiered on Vevo on August 28, 2012.[12] The video begins with Ryan Tedder walking over leafy ground in front end of a cute sunset in the San Francisco Bay surface area. He stoops to choice up a glowing yellow brawl. He so sees what appears to be a cord of yellowish lights. In that location is a shot of Ryan post-obit the lights, so the video cuts to alternating shots of the band with strings of lights in the background, and different people dancing to the music. He is shown with the xanthous ball in his middle, glowing through his clothes, and suggesting he had lost his heart or it had been broken, and he had regained information technology. The video cuts with an aerial view of the forest, and the sun rise.[13]
Carl Williot of Idolator wrote a positive review, commenting, "The hypercolor lights complement the effervescence and effortlessness of Tedder's vocalism, and the full package is brilliant, it's colorful, it's bawdy. Like a delicious music video salad."[14] Amy Sciarretto of Pop Vanquish commented: "'Experience Again' won't wow you with spectacular graphics only it what it volition do is allow yous to concentrate on the vocal, which is slated to appear on the band's upcoming third studio album. Perhaps that was OneRepublic'southward intention past selecting this no frills treatment for the offset visual taste of their side by side record. It was an effective strategy since information technology reeled the states in claw, line and sinker."[xv]
